The Rice Road and the Harvest Home

In 1986, on the day of Jingzhe, spring thunder rolled across the Jianghuai region. Li Zhao, the youngest daughter of the Li family, crouched on a field ridge, clutching her crumpled high school diploma. Suddenly, blue light glowed in her palm: the Farming System had activated. Her spatial storage held super rice seeds from a hundred years in the future, genetically improved fish fry, and a bronze compass that could reveal soil fertility. Meanwhile, at the county guesthouse, Wang Cheng, a newly regularized commune official, was washing his polyester-cotton shirt in an enamel basin when a holographic screen for the Infrastructure System appeared on his wristwatch. Its modules contained blueprints for smart road-building machines, hydropower plant plans, and concrete formulas that had yet to be invented in 1986.

One was a farm girl who knew the twenty-four solar terms by heart but was driven to desperation by yields of less than 300 jin per mu. The other was a grassroots official who had memorized the People’s Daily editorials but was stuck with a gravel road project that had dragged on for three years without reaching its destination. What happens when modern technology Systems collide with official documents stamped in red from the 1980s, and genetically edited rice meets state grain procurement policies? Watch this powerful farming-and-infrastructure duo break through the constraints of ration coupons and diesel coupons:

She grows “Spark Rice” on her private plot, yielding 1,200 jin per mu, and upends the commune’s fish farm with a method for raising crayfish alongside fish.

He leads the villagers in laying a provincial highway in just 15 days using precast components, then erects the county’s first automatic telephone exchange tower to the roar of diesel engines. From standing up to clan powers to drawing the attention of the Central Agricultural Research Group, from smuggling fertilizer on the black market to founding township enterprises, these two young people carrying the keys to the future blaze a path to rural China’s comeback, along the ridges of the household responsibility system and into the springtime of reform and opening up.
