During the Investiture of the Gods calamity, tensions began to rise between the Interception and Chan Sects over the names to be placed on the Investiture of the Gods List. Yuanshi and Laozi led Chan Sect elites such as Guangchengzi and Chijingzi to Jinao Island, hoping to discuss the list with Tongtian, reach an understanding, and put an end to the dispute between the two sects.
Not long after they set foot on Jinao Island, a disciple of the Interception Sect hurried over with a report: at Sishui Pass, Jiang Ziya had sent troops into a fierce clash with Interception Sect disciples, and many members of the sect had been slaughtered. The news struck everyone present like a boulder dropped into a still lake. Yuanshi and Tongtian dared not delay and quickly dispatched their disciples to Sishui Pass to investigate the truth.
Their investigation revealed that the clash had been Lamp-Lighter’s idea, intended to suppress the Interception Sect. The incident was finally settled when Yuanshi agreed to provide ten top-grade spiritual treasures and Lamp-Lighter apologized.
Yuanshi furiously rebuked Lamp-Lighter over the matter. Lamp-Lighter appeared sincerely remorseful, but secretly held on to his grudge, laying the groundwork for his later journey west.
A contest during the Investiture of the Gods calamity jolted Celestial Venerable Yuanshi awake to the Interception Sect’s astonishing strength, leaving him shaken. Unwilling to accept defeat, he urged Laozi to join him in opposing the Interception Sect.
As tensions continued to escalate, relations among the Three Sects broke down completely. Yuanshi and Laozi knew a battle between the Interception and Chan Sects was inevitable. Yet they understood that the two of them alone could never withstand the Zhuxian Sword Formation. With no other choice, they sent someone west to invite the Two Sages to lend their aid.
The Two Sages saw through the situation at a glance and set harsh conditions. The pair had no choice, but with the coming war in mind, they gritted their teeth and agreed. Thus began a grand, decisive battle to determine the fate of the Investiture of the Gods.
