The Golden Hairpin Before the Buddha: A Phoenix's Gambit in Troubled Times

In the fifth year of Zhengguang in the Northern Wei, Xiao Mingzhu, daughter of a powerful minister and modeled after Erzhu Ying'e, was offered to the imperial palace by her own father. Before the golden hairpin in her hair had even warmed, Empress Dowager Hu had her head shaved in the Buddha hall. She thought a life of prayer by a dim lamp would be her fate, unaware that this was only the beginning of her turbulent life in a chaotic age. During the Heyin Incident, her father slaughtered the court officials with his own blade. As blood stained the palace walls, she hid her bloodied hairpin and understood for the first time: on the chessboard of power, even a piece before the Buddha could not escape being moved.

When the golden hairpin from before the Buddha finally pierced Empress Dowager Hu's throat, Xiao Mingzhu realized she was no longer the young nun who had once sought answers in the scriptures. She helped Yuwen Yong unite the north, and before her death, recorded a lifetime of political schemes in The Record of Women's Command and Statecraft. Between its yellowed pages lay a truth colder than an imperial robe: in times of chaos,
