The Millet Has Turned Yellow

On the Loess Plateau, a single grain of broomcorn millet holds the love letters of two generations.

In the spring of 1983, Zhang Qinglin, a master's graduate in agricultural science, returned to Shigejie with improved millet seeds. At the village entrance, he ran into Wang Xiulian, a young woman blocking the road with an abacus in her hands. The old village secretary's university-educated daughter, she was confronting a developer to save the old mill, which was about to be demolished. Their unexpected reunion unearthed secrets two generations had buried in the millet fields:

Thirty years earlier, Xiulian's mother had hidden an iron box in a youth sent-down program's experimental field. Inside was a 1975 seed-breeding journal, its pages soaked with unsent love poems. Twenty years earlier, Qinglin's father had died young after standing in the rain to protect the millet seeds, clutching half of a blue handkerchief embroidered with a millet ear. Now, as livestream cameras for online shopping turned toward the century-old mill and genetically modified labels were pasted onto bags of ancestral millet seeds, the collision between traditional wedding customs and modern agriculture was about to erupt in the gullies of Shimao Village.

Love poems spilled from the beads of the abacus, and rust spots on the millet grew into a symbol of joined hearts.

Xiulian hid mathematical formulas in the songs sung during traditional heritage earth-pounding ceremonies, while Qinglin carved his vows into millet stalks with a grafting knife. The old village secretary kept the 1975 ledger locked away and refused to hand over power, while the developer unearthed a yellowed marriage certificate at the bottom of a well dug by the sent-down youth. When a torrential rain burst the experimental field's protective embankment, the two generations clung to their millet seeds and embraced in the muddy floodwaters, weeping. Only then did they understand that inside the toughest millet husks on the Loess Plateau lay the tenderest human hearts.
