Operation Pendulum

**Protagonist**: Ji Wangshu, an interpreter at the French Consulate in Shanghai, a playboy on the surface but secretly an operative for both the Military Statistics Bureau and the Green Gang

**Setting**: The Catholic church in Xujiahui and the control tower at Longhua Airport

Japan attempts to bribe France into granting rights to build roads beyond its concession. Ji Wangshu overhears evidence of the consul taking bribes through a brass listening tube in the confessional. He steals fuses from the French military arsenal and turns the church bell into an electromagnetic jammer, causing a Japanese reconnaissance plane to crash into a cotton warehouse controlled by the Green Gang. At last, he stabs himself in the lung with the consul's gold-plated fountain pen. Near death, he plays a recording at the signing ceremony for the Secret Franco-Japanese Pact, prompting French police to arrest the Japanese military attaché on the spot.
