Shen Qingchen, the regent, stood beneath the jade steps in his black, scaled robe, sternly rejecting petitions from several ministers. The assembled officials stood silent as cicadas in winter. In the back garden of the Mu estate, Mu Nanyan disguised herself as a man and climbed over the wall to meet her close friend, Yu Wanqing. They headed to the racetrack outside the city, where she rode with more flair than any of the young noblemen. On the way back, Mu Nanyan's horse was suddenly spooked. At the last moment, Shen Qingchen happened to pass by and rescued her. He saw through her disguise but had no idea who she was. Shen Qingchen was drawn to Mu Nanyan's courage and lively spirit, so different from that of ordinary young ladies, and sent someone to investigate her identity. Mu Nanyan, meanwhile, was both afraid of and curious about this stern young nobleman.
