Love Has Run Its Course

When my fiancée, a CEO who had always feared marriage, learned that I’d voluntarily handed over my patent so her beloved assistant could use it to boost his résumé, she finally agreed to marry me and fulfill my mother’s dying wish. But on our wedding day, the assistant became jealous and threatened to bang his head against a wall. So my fiancée stood me up and took him on a trip around the world to cheer him up. My mother’s condition became critical after the shock. I found my fiancée and begged her to return the salary she’d been holding for me all these years so I could pay for my mother’s surgery. But she said I was making a scene, had her bodyguards throw me out, then sweetly boarded the plane with her assistant. By the time I limped to the hospital, my mother was already dead. I handled everything alone and accepted an offer from a major tech company. When I returned my company ID, my fiancée had just come back from her trip around the world. Looking thoroughly satisfied, she said: “I had to leave on a business trip at the last minute. I didn’t mean to stand you up. I’ll make it up to you with another wedding, so you and your mother can both be happy. That’s good enough, right?” But she didn’t know that from the moment my mother died, I’d decided to let go of my feelings for her.
