The ancient Nuo God left behind nine masks, including the Witch God, the Ghost King, the Yaksha, and the Judge. Each mask corresponds to the soul of a strange beast from the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Those who wear them can commune with the corresponding ghosts and gods to gain supernatural powers, but their minds are gradually eroded by the masks’ consciousness. The Nuo masks can also hold memories. When a wearer dies, the mask automatically records their “thread of karma.” In the next life, a reincarnated wearer can inherit some of their abilities, but must endure an even more severe backlash.
The “Twelve Trials of the Nuo Altar” require participants to complete ritualized challenges in a Nuo temple, including driving out plague, summoning gods, and making sacrifices. The “Judge’s Trial” requires them to pass judgment on the sins of their previous lives, while the “Yaksha’s Trial” forces them to fight an embodiment of their evil thoughts.
Who is behind it all? Can Jiang Jiu, Qin Zhao, and Lin Shen escape a destiny that has lasted ten thousand years?
