Spirit Dream Returns to Dust tells the fantastical story of Ling Li, who bears a special mission. After a catastrophe strikes the mortal realm, she is rescued and taken to the spirit realm, where she begins her cultivation journey and ultimately saves both realms.
After the catastrophe in the mortal realm, Ling Li awakens in the spirit realm and learns that her family has perished. Determined to avenge them and save the mortal realm, she trains diligently in the Spirit Abyss under the guidance of an elder. Though she struggles to tame her spiritual power and faces jealousy and obstruction from others, her unyielding resolve drives her to grow stronger. By chance, she obtains the legacy of the Astral Spirit Art in some ruins. After a difficult process of merging with it, her power increases greatly, but this also arouses the wariness of certain factions in the spirit realm, which challenge her with schemes of their own. Ling Li prevails through wisdom and courage, only to become trapped in a mire of rumors and covert sabotage.
At this time, a mysterious dream guides her to Cold Abyss Ridge in search of the Astral Talisman. There, she and her companions endure one crisis after another, facing ice bears, ice spikes, ice serpents, and other dangers before successfully claiming the talisman. Her strength makes another leap forward. Upon returning to the spirit realm, she discovers a plot by the dark forces in the mortal realm to connect the two realms and draw in dark power. She joins forces with various factions and leads an elite team of spirit cultivators to the mortal realm.
In the mortal realm, Ling Li witnesses the devastation wrought by the encroaching darkness. Fighting her way through countless obstacles, she ventures deep into a dark castle and uncovers the dark forces' scheme to collect soul power and open a passage. During a fierce battle against them, Ling Li risks using a forbidden technique. At last, she faces the dark leader in a decisive battle at the dark altar. Ignoring her injuries, she destroys the altar and uses Astral Judgment to defeat the dark leader, dispelling the darkness and bringing dawn to both realms.
