I Send My Longing to the Bright Moon

On the day the exam results were announced, I went to fetch my drunken elder brother. But I accidentally overheard him ask his closest friend, Pei Wangzhi: "Now that you've placed first in the imperial exams, isn't it time to propose to the girl you've been hiding away?" Pei Wangzhi's voice was thick with drink as he sneered, "There was no parental consent, nor any matchmaker's word. We were just having fun. It didn't mean anything." I stood outside the screen, clutching my handkerchief so tightly my fingers hurt. Two years of love, our secret promise to spend our lives together: it had all just been a game to him.
