The protagonist, Lin Ye, comes from an ordinary working-class family and lives in an urban village in a third-tier city in China. His family struggled financially when he was young, and his parents argued constantly before eventually divorcing. His mother raised him on her own. With mediocre grades, he was branded a “bad student” and struggled to survive in the cracks of an exam-oriented education system.
