“The Nokia E71 vibrates 600 times per minute, while the fatal heart rate for someone with congenital heart disease is 300 beats per minute. And the odds of us meeting were a miracle: one in 1.7 billion.” In late autumn 2011, the gloomy mathematical prodigy Cheng Ye met transfer student Su Tang beneath the library's tin awning. Wisteria petals clung to the hem of her water-blue skirt. Half a fingernail was missing from her left pinky, yet a single grape-flavored hard candy was enough to stop his right hand from cramping. When the static from an old cassette player tore open Cheng Ye's traumatic memories, Su Tang took his hand in the instant the lights went out and drew rippling, pulsating function curves on his cast with a fluorescent marker. He carried the Nokia phone his mother had left behind, calculating when his father would lash out beneath the shadow of 24 ghostly text messages. She wore her school uniform inside out like a painter's smock, hid fast-acting heart pills in a cartoon-covered pillbox, and secretly used her Sharp phone to record his eyelashes trembling as he solved problems. They built a shelter from 327 text messages, encrypting each other's heartbeats in the tones of their keypads, until New Year's Eve, when a blizzard swept in. He lost that girl forever, and Su Tang's unsent confession remained frozen in the drafts folder of her pink flip phone. Five years later, when the restored old phone lit up again, the messages permanently lost to a damaged memory card were like the broken lines of rain on the library rooftop where they first met. They had existed, yet could never again be pieced together into a complete picture. This is a story of two wounded souls falling in love in a signal dead zone. Every heartfelt word left unspoken became the lingering warmth of footprints overlapping in the snow. The instant their heartbeats stopped, they shattered the one-in-1.7-billion chance they had been given.
