Notes on the Huangting Jing

This book explores the mysteries of Daoist inner alchemy, traditional medicine, and the philosophy of life, offering a modern reinterpretation of the profound wisdom in the Daoist classic The Yellow Court Classic. It not only lays out the text’s central theories but also draws on historical legends and cultivation practices to reveal how ancient practitioners explored the mysteries of the human body through “inner observation” and “visualization” in pursuit of longevity.

Key Concepts and Structure

1. System of Thought and Model of the Human Body

Based on the three volumes of The Yellow Court Classic, the book develops a theory of the human body comprising “three regions, eight vistas, and twenty-four perfected beings,” corresponding to the twenty-four solar terms and forming a cultivation framework in which humanity and Heaven are one.

It uses personified divine names to represent the functions of the organs and emphasizes the unity of body, qi, and spirit.

2. Cultivation Methods and Health Practices

Visualization: harmonize the internal organs and accumulate essence and qi.

Swallowing saliva and preserving essence: restrain desire and safeguard one’s vital essence and qi.

Cultivating the three fields: when all three work together, the body remains whole and free from harm.

3. Philosophical Core: Movement, Stillness, and Balance

The book advocates awakening one’s potential through inner calm and meeting the agitation of the outside world with simplicity and freedom from desire. It teaches us to optimize our lives by “knowing when to stop, and only then finding stability.”

Distinctive Features: the integration of medicine and inner alchemy; the Yellow Court approach to Zen and emotional regulation.

Modern Relevance: explores how The Yellow Court Classic can help people today relieve anxiety and improve focus.
