This novel is presented in a series of chapters, each telling a story that stands on its own while connecting to the others. At the command of the King of Hell in the Underworld, Black and White Impermanence frequently travel to the world of the living to handle incidents caused by abnormal souls.
In the first chapter, Lin Yu, an extraordinary man in the living world, reaches the end of his lifespan, but his soul fails to return to the Underworld. His lifespan also disappears from the Book of Life and Death. Black and White Impermanence travel to the world of the living to investigate. Tracing Lin Yu’s life, they discover that before his death he had gone searching for an ancient artifact capable of defying fate. After returning, his behavior grew strange, and his body mysteriously vanished. Following the clues, they find a temple in a remote mountain and discover that Lin Yu’s soul is trapped in a magical formation, where a black-robed figure is performing an evil ritual. After a fierce battle, Black and White Impermanence defeat the black-robed figure, rescue Lin Yu’s soul, and bring it back to the Underworld.
In later chapters, they deal with vengeful ghosts wreaking havoc in the living world, unravel mysteries in which resentment keeps souls from returning to their proper place, and stop ill-intentioned people from using sorcery to tamper with the Book of Life and Death. In every story, Black and White Impermanence rely on their abilities and wits to resolve crises between the living and the dead, maintaining the balance between the two realms.
