I Am Sha Wujing

Beneath the grand narrative of Journey to the West lies a forgotten history of awakening. Sha Wujing, a silent Curtain-Rolling General, was banished to the Flowing Sand River after accidentally breaking the Glazed Lamp, where he endured the torment of nine cycles of reincarnation. He carried the skulls of the first nine Pilgrims, waiting for the tenth, Jin Chanzi, to arrive, while deep in his heart he questioned the hypocrisy of Heaven’s rules.

In this story, Sha Wujing is no longer an obscure porter carrying the luggage. He is a rebel who gradually awakens along the pilgrimage. He witnesses Sun Wukong’s wild, unruly nature and Tang Monk’s unwavering faith, yet inside he undergoes an even more profound struggle and transformation. In the reflection of the Flowing Sand River, he sees both his former glory and his present humiliation, as well as the many lives shaped by Heaven’s system.

As the pilgrimage progresses, Sha Wujing gradually uncovers the layers of conspiracy behind the journey west. He realizes that the immortals of Heaven and the demons of the monster realm are all merely pawns in a game of power. And he, too, is searching within that game for his true self and a path to redemption.

Told from Sha Wujing’s first-person perspective, I Am Sha Wujing takes you into a world of philosophy and rebellion. Here, you will witness a silent man’s awakening and feel his struggle against fate and his pursuit of truth. This is an epic of growth, rebellion, and self-redemption, as well as a profound deconstruction and reinvention of traditional mythology.
