The Story of Lü Dongbin's Immortality

Lu Dongbin was originally an ordinary man. Bright from a young age, he nevertheless had little success in his official career. After meeting Han Zhongli, he passed ten trials with an even temper, earning Han Zhongli's admiration and instruction in the Dao. He diligently cultivated in Mount Lu and eventually attained the Dao and became an immortal, joining the Eight Immortals. Other versions mention his chance encounters with a fox spirit and He Xiangu, but all center on his cultivation and ascension to immortality.
