Journey to the West is the crowning achievement of Chinese classical fantasy fiction.
The story follows four pilgrims on their Journey to the West. Tang Sanzang, Master Xuanzang, is sent by Emperor Taizong of Tang to travel west and obtain the sacred scriptures. His eldest disciple, Sun Wukong, was born from a celestial stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain. He learned powerful magic from Patriarch Bodhi, including the Seventy-Two Transformations and the Somersault Cloud, and wields the Golden Cudgel. Wukong is clever, mischievous, and rebellious by nature, but utterly loyal to Tang Sanzang.
Zhu Bajie was once Marshal Tianpeng, but after committing an offense, he was banished to the mortal world and reborn in the body of a pig. He is lazy, gluttonous, and lecherous, yet also endearingly guileless. His weapon is the Nine-Toothed Rake. Sha Seng was once the Curtain-Rolling General, but after accidentally breaking the Glazed Lamp, he was banished to the Flowing Sand River. Honest and steadfast, he wields the Demon-Subduing Treasure Staff.
The four pilgrims set out from the Great Tang in the East and head west. Along the way, they face countless demons and monsters, such as the Spider Demons of Pansi Cave and the three demons of Lion Camel Ridge. With Sun Wukong’s vast powers, the help of Zhu Bajie and Sha Seng, and aid from various deities, they overcome the Eighty-One Tribulations. These ordeals test the pilgrims’ resolve and faith, while revealing both the flaws and the nobility of human nature. In the end, they reach the Western Heaven and obtain the scriptures, and all four attain enlightenment. Their pilgrimage reflects the virtues of perseverance, courage, and unity. Filled with fantastical imagination, this work holds an irreplaceable place in the history of Chinese literature.
