At the national middle school taekwondo championships, backstage.
Lin Xia was wearing her taekwondo uniform. She had barely stepped out of the restroom when her phone buzzed in her hand.
She checked the number, answered, and kept walking toward the competition floor. “Hello, Yuya.”
At the same time, she heard a lighter flick.
She glanced toward the sound.
A boy with dyed blond hair was leaning against the wall, lighting the cigarette in his mouth.
When he saw Lin Xia looking at him, he frowned and stared at her without moving.
Lin Xia widened her eyes and stared right back, unflinching. From the corner of her eye, she spotted the “No Smoking” sign beside his head. She took a closer look and furrowed her brow.
On the other end of the call, Yuya asked why she had stopped talking.
Lin Xia scoffed, shifting her gaze back to the boy. “I ran into some jerk with no manners.”

A week later, a new transfer student arrived in her class.
Lin Xia watched the boy introduce himself at the front of the room. At first glance, he looked familiar.
