After the September 18 Incident, calls to resist Japan grew louder. Su Hailong and Huang Xiansheng fired the first shots in Shenyang's resistance against the Japanese invaders. After his adoptive father and loved ones died one after another, Su Hailong emerged from his grief and set about forming resistance forces. Together with Deng Tiemei, he joined the Northeast Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Army. With Zhang Wanting's influence and help, Su Hailong proudly joined the Communist Party of China and led his troops in delivering a devastating blow to the Japanese Kwantung Army. The Japanese Kwantung Army launched multiple campaigns to encircle and wipe out Su Hailong's unit. As the resistance grew increasingly difficult, the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army was ordered to withdraw to the Soviet Far East for rest and recuperation. Su Hailong was sent to Yan'an's Anti-Japanese Military and Political University for training. After completing his studies, he was assigned to the 88th Infantry Brigade in the Soviet Far East. Su Hailong repeatedly led small units into the Northeast to infiltrate and reconnoiter the Japanese Kwantung Army. He successfully blew up the massive howitzer at the Hulin Fortress, hailed as the "number one cannon in Asia," clearing the way for the final offensive.
