With the nation in peril, Li Deming, a wealthy young platoon leader, breaks free from the shackles of his feudal family and resolutely plunges into the bloody tide of national liberation. Fired by passionate patriotism, he and a band of rough-edged soldiers set off for the anti-Japanese battlefield, ready to give their lives for their country. Through grueling campaigns in which they repeatedly risk their lives and win distinction, and amid the blood and fire of fighting shoulder to shoulder with their Eighth Route Army allies, they battle across Shanxi and Shandong, facing death with courage and fighting on with unyielding resolve. They score a string of victories: killing a Japanese major general, risking their lives to save the villagers of Hanjiazhai, and joining an Eighth Route Army detachment advancing into Shandong to launch a surprise attack on an enemy airfield. Burning with the determination to fight the enemy to the bitter end, Li Deming leads the lightly wounded from the military hospital in a desperate effort to reinforce the defense of Teng County. The Japanese eventually seize the city’s defenses. Li Deming rallies the remnants of his force and resists fiercely, battling for days and refusing to surrender until their ammunition and provisions are gone and they perish alongside the enemy. With their lives and blood, the Sichuan Army soldiers fulfill their sacred vow to serve their country and fight for national liberation: We will never return to Sichuan until we drive the Japanese out of China!
