H. G. Wells’s The Outline of History, also published under the title A Short History of the World, consists of eight parts and thirty-eight chapters. Beginning with Earth in the universe, it runs all the way to the First World War, bringing to life the rise and fall of superpowers such as ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Britain, the United States, and France.
The author unravels long and complex historical records, presenting them one by one in an accessible, easy-to-understand narrative. The result is an engrossing world history worthy of being called the Records of the Grand Historian. When the book was first published in 1920, it caused an immediate sensation and went through numerous reprints.
