The Cold Moon Draws Near the City

College student Li Yanluo accidentally falls into a deadly deific trial. With no immortal roots or cultivation, her sole wish is to keep her head down and survive. In the chaos at the end of the Shang dynasty, she narrowly escapes the slaughter in Zhaoge and mistakenly crosses paths with Jiang Ziya. Keeping a low profile, she becomes his maid and makes her way toward Xiqi, dodging Shang soldiers and demonic trouble along the way while pretending to be a nobody among the great figures of the Investiture of the Gods.

Even after reaching Xiqi, she stays true to her desire to avoid the world. Yet she unexpectedly becomes sisters with Zi Xian, the daughter of Bi Gan, and meets Feng Lai, a nine-headed phoenix spirit. She deliberately keeps away from the conflict between Shang and Zhou, refusing to get involved in their battles. She only occasionally uses modern knowledge to quietly help Zi Xian avoid danger, never drawing attention to herself and asking only to live in peace.

But the more she wishes for peace, the more trouble comes her way! Shen Gongbao launches a surprise attack, and Zi Xian and the Queen Mother of Xiqi are killed. Just as she tries to flee the turmoil, Feng Lai betrays and kills her. A thousand-year-old tree demon saves her, carves a jade orchid from a fragment of Nuwa's Stone, and seals her soul inside it, using moonlight to rebuild her body. Reborn with amnesia and haunted by pain, she still wants to avoid the world. She appears as a cold, ethereal immortal in the Korean state of Han during the Warring States period. She hopes to keep her head down and survive, but then she runs into Han Fei.

Through a twist of fate, she gets caught up in a strange case and is forced to abandon her principles of staying out of things. Combining the keen insight she honed in the chaos of the Investiture of the Gods with modern criminal-investigation methods, she joins forces with Han Fei to solve cases. Outwardly reserved and low-key, she is actually far more intelligent than those around her. Without making a fuss, she exposes the schemes of treacherous officials and deals with petty villains. She never seeks out conflict, yet turns the tables and gets her payback while solving cases. Feng Lai, the betrayer, suffers the backlash of Heaven's Dao, while Shen Gongbao's remaining followers are swept aside in the process. From a maid who just wanted to avoid the world to a discreet strategist of the Warring States, she is swept along by turbulent times in both her lives but never loses sight of herself. A mortal among the mighty, she lives to become a legend, delivering the ultimate thrill of becoming more remarkable the harder she tries to stay out of the spotlight!
