The Tang Dynasty, an empire that shone throughout history, lasted 289 years and witnessed the height of Chinese civilization. From the founding of the dynasty by Emperor Gaozu of Tang, Li Yuan, to its seizure by Zhu Wen, Emperor Taizu of Later Liang, this era left behind countless remarkable stories.
The Prosperous Early Tang
After Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, ascended the throne, he swiftly defeated the Eastern Turks and won the title of Heavenly Qaghan, ushering in the Rule of Zhenguan. The era's prosperity was reflected not only in military victories, but also in cultural and political reforms. Emperor Taizong welcomed talented officials and pursued enlightened policies, helping the nation recover and become the center of East Asia.
The Female Emperor Wu Zetian
His successor, Emperor Gaozong of Tang, continued expanding the empire's borders and established Luoyang as the Eastern Capital. After Emperor Gaozong's death, Wu Zetian declared herself emperor in 690, becoming the only female emperor in Chinese history and bringing rule by a woman to its peak. The Tang Dynasty was restored in 705, when the Shenlong Coup brought Emperor Zhongzong back to the throne.
The Kaiyuan Era of Prosperity
The reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang ushered in the prosperous Kaiyuan era. He corrected the failings of previous administrations and implemented reforms, bringing political order and economic prosperity. The nation's population reached around 80 million, and its power was at its height.
Decline and Fall
However, the An Lushan Rebellion shattered this peace, leading to the rise of regional military governors and eunuch control, while the nation's power gradually declined. Although Emperor Xianzong, Emperor Wuzong, and Emperor Xuanzong of Tang achieved the Yuanhe Restoration, the Huichang Restoration, and the Dazhong Era of Good Government, their efforts could not prevent the dynasty's eventual decline. In 907, the regional military governor Zhu Wen usurped the throne, officially bringing the Tang Dynasty to an end and ushering in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.
