A Journey Against Time: The Resilient Years of Mao Lanfang

In a remote rural village in the 1960s, a girl named Mao Lanfang grows up facing hardship and upheaval. Her father dies of illness when she is young, leaving her mother and five small children to depend on one another. To provide for the family, her mother has no choice but to remarry, taking as her husband the eldest Lin brother from their village. Because of the family’s poverty and complicated relationships, Mao Lanfang is sent to live with her maternal aunt in the city. Her aunt’s family is not wealthy, but her aunt and uncle’s kindness and care give Mao Lanfang a relatively warm environment in which to grow up. Yet the city’s bustle and splendor stand in stark contrast to the rural life she holds in her heart, often leaving her confused and lonely. While living with her aunt’s family, she must not only cope with academic pressure, but also adjust to the many unfamiliar aspects of city life and navigate the delicate relationships with her aunt’s children. Despite everything, Mao Lanfang never gives up on loving life or pursuing her dreams. She studies hard and repays her aunt for raising her with excellent grades. She works diligently to ease the burden on her aunt’s household. Above all, she treats everyone who has helped her with a grateful heart. As she grows older, Mao Lanfang gradually comes to understand the true meaning of life. She realizes that no matter where you are or what hardships you face, as long as you have love and faith in your heart, you can overcome anything and make a remarkable life of your own. With Mao Lanfang’s coming-of-age journey at its heart, Fragrant Years: Mao Lanfang’s Resilient Journey uses delicate prose and vivid scenes to portray the indomitable spirit of a rural girl born in the 1960s as she perseveres through adversity and presses onward.
