Immortal Status in the Mortal World

Wangshu, the eldest handmaiden of the Jade Pool, had a secret: she was tired of the life of an immortal.

While the other celestial maidens counted how many times the jade blossoms had bloomed, she crouched at the edge of a cloud, peeking down at the cooking smoke rising from the mortal world.

At last, she leaped down, full of ambition to “save mortals,” only to drink a bowl of diluted Meng Po Soup.

Now she is Mu Shaoqing, a village woman with a daughter who can see ghosts and spirits. She runs a little shop that always attracts evil spirits, her partner is a battlefield reaper, and her disciple is a plant that took human form.

Wasn’t she supposed to enjoy the mortal world to her heart’s content? Why is it all chores and ghost-catching?

Hush, her celestial identity is clanging away amid all the pots and pans.
