“May 20. Sunny, no rain.
Today I fell in love...”
This was Qin Wuyu's diary. I hadn't been in touch with him for a long time. The last time before that when we got together was during our sophomore year of college. Back then, he was tired of school and planning to make his way in the world, so we had a farewell dinner.
After that, we were rarely in touch, and didn't even meet once. Then, last week, he invited me to travel to T Country.
His face was no longer as handsome as it had been in the past. Wrinkles had crept across his cheeks and around his eyes.
We drank merrily, raising our glasses again and again until we were thoroughly drunk and talking nonsense. I asked how he'd been all these years. He said it was a long story. Then he had his secretary bring me three leather-bound notebooks, saying they recorded his life over the years.
I was about to turn him down, but he said, “Wang Sheng, I haven't had a night this enjoyable in years. There's so much I want to tell my brothers. But we can't turn back time. I want to speak, but I can't bring myself to. So all I can do is give you a diary. I hope you won't end up making the same mistakes I did.”
I planned to return it the next day, once we'd sobered up, but then came the terrible news...
All I could do was take the diary home and open it to the first page.
“Sunny, no rain. Qin Wuyu, love and hate in my heart, yet no words to express them.
Yan Ruyu, Yuan Ruyu, fate brings us together and parts us like rain.
How many foolish boys dream, how many young women yearn? Like rain, we meet and part, our fate unfulfilled. So much love and hate, so much pain at parting. All I can do is choke back my words.”
