Synopsis

Drawing on the historical legacy of the five Yan states of Former Yan, Later Yan, Western Yan, Southern Yan, and Northern Yan during the era of the Five Barbarians ravaging China, this epic tells the story of Murong Xuan, a descendant of the Yan people, and Lin Wanqing as they work together to promote peace and trade. The story begins in the northern deserts, where the two lead a Eurasian alliance to pacify the Hephthalite wars and break up an encirclement by Central Asian tribes. Throughout, they are guided by Yan’s principles of “harmonizing all peoples and safeguarding livelihoods.” Later, they establish diplomatic ties and open trade routes with the Arab Empire, rescue Byzantine envoys, and wipe out Hephthalite remnants in Eastern Europe. In the process, they recreate the beginnings of Yan’s old system of centralized trade administration, modeled on the “Protector of the Eastern Yi,” laying the groundwork for a global trade network. They then embark on voyages across the seas, establish diplomatic ties with Fusang, and unexpectedly discover islands in the South Seas, where they promote sea buckthorn cultivation. They also connect the Indian subcontinent, completing a network of sea and land trade routes, and bring sea buckthorn cultivation techniques to Zanzibar in Africa. At every step, they uphold Yan’s original commitment to “encouraging farming and sericulture” for the people’s livelihood. At last, in Shiraz, Persia, they convene an international trade conference. Murong Xuan and Lin Wanqing lead more than fifty nations to sign the General Convention on Global Trade, whose principles incorporate the wisdom of Yan’s old policies. The old Yan flag flies at the gathering. Three years later, an international Sea Buckthorn Festival is held in Jicheng, near Yan’s former capital of Longcheng. The academy founded by the pair offers courses on the history of agriculture and sericulture in Yan. Thus, the peaceful ideals of the Yan states from the era of the Five Barbarians ravaging China shine across the world through sea buckthorn and the global trade network.
