With my ALS in its late stages, I asked someone to find me a hospice volunteer.
My request was simple: I wanted her to help me spend my final days with some dignity, so I wouldn’t be alone or die in disgrace.
We settled the terms and agreed on a price over the phone, then decided to meet as soon as possible.
I never imagined she’d be the girlfriend I’d cruelly abandoned three years ago.
The moment we met, she threw the coffee in her hand in my face.
“Jiang Chen, do you think this is funny? A menace like you could outlive the whole world!”
I sighed helplessly and tugged at her sleeve.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t explain properly. I’m actually arranging this for my grandmother.”
She was silent for a long time before signing the contract I’d prepared, her face grim.
I was secretly delighted.
Now that it was all in writing, I wouldn’t have to worry about no one being there to bury me when my illness finally took its toll.
