Favoring Boys Over Girls? I Turned Around and Got Into Peking University

After my parents divorced, no one wanted me, so my grandmother took me back to the countryside. She called me a burden, saying I had ruined her son's chances of a good marriage. Before dawn, she drove me out to feed the pigs. In the bitter cold of winter, she even shoved me into a lake full of ice. The villagers gossiped, saying she favored boys and had a heart of stone. But later, she shielded me from a speeding car and died beneath its wheels. After she died, I found a stack of newspapers between the bed slats. Inside were the tuition fees she'd secretly saved for me.
