A Compendium of Medicinal Uses

The Benefits, Medicinal Properties, and Methods of Taking Chinese Herbs Chinese medicinal herbs are nature's treasures, imbued with the essence of heaven and earth. Each has its own yin and yang properties and one or more of the five flavors, along with unique effects. They treat illness and promote health, offering immeasurable benefits. In terms of their medicinal properties, some enter the heart meridian to calm the mind and soothe the spirit; others travel through the liver meridian to soothe the liver and regulate qi; some enter the spleen meridian to strengthen the spleen and nourish the stomach; others pass through the lung meridian to clear the lungs and relieve coughing; and some reach the kidney meridian to nourish the kidneys and preserve essence. When combined, herbs serve as chief, deputy, assistant, and envoy, complementing one another to balance yin and yang and promote the smooth flow of qi and blood. There are also many things to consider when taking herbs in daily life. They may be simmered into a decoction to extract their essence and treat illness, or processed into pills, powders, plasters, and elixirs for convenient use and lasting effect. Some can even be eaten raw, preserving their natural properties and unique benefits. However, herbal treatment depends on accurate diagnosis and must be tailored to each person; there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Here, I will explain the benefits and medicinal properties of Chinese herbs, as well as how to take them, in the hope of helping people learn about and use herbs, enjoy good health, and carry on the traditions of Chinese medicine.
