This graphic novel is adapted from the film Red Flag Spectrum. The story takes place in Suojing Town, by the Hutuo River in Hebei. The local farmers have long suffered under the oppression of the tyrannical landlord Feng Lanchi, living in misery. In 1901, the farmer Zhu Laogong rose up against Feng Lanchi to protect 48 mu of communal farmland and an ancient bell. Outmatched, he was ultimately defeated and gave his life. Twenty-five years later, Zhu Laogong's son, Zhu Laozhong, returned to his hometown after years of wandering, hoping to avenge his father as soon as possible. As he rebuilt his home and began a new life, his family continued to be persecuted by Feng Lanchi. In his darkest moment, Zhu Laozhong met Jia Xiangnong, a Communist Party member. Inspired and educated by him, Zhu Laozhong joined the revolution and led the farmers of the county to final victory in the struggle against the “head-cutting tax.”
