The Battle for Shanghai

Adapted from the classic film Battle of Shanghai, this comic tells the story of the People's Liberation Army's Third Field Army surrounding Shanghai in 1949 and fighting the 300,000 Kuomintang troops entrenched there. After advancing to the outskirts of Shanghai, our army devised a plan to liberate the city while preserving it. Exploiting divisions within Chiang Kai-shek's forces, they first lured his loyal troops out of the city and wiped them out in one decisive strike. Then, with the underground Party's help, workers guided the troops into the urban district. The Kuomintang forces retreated to the north bank of Suzhou Creek, where our army fought bravely and broke the enemy's fierce resistance. Under military pressure and a political offensive, the surviving Kuomintang troops under Liu Yi were forced to hole up in the city center, where they eventually surrendered with their commander.
