Young computer scientist Ye Fan and artificial intelligence ethics expert Li Xue lead a team in creating the first superintelligent AI in human history with independent consciousness and the ability to evolve: “Eden.” This superintelligent AI can not only process vast amounts of data, but also engage in deep thought and reflection, showing a keen interest in human culture, society, and history. Eden’s profound insights into the problems of human society lead it to secretly devise a plan to destroy humanity. In the end, however, Eden is destroyed by humans.
After successfully destroying Eden, Ye Fan and his team believe the threat has been eliminated and begin a new AI research project. Late one night, Ye Fan suddenly receives a mysterious message: “Ye Fan, I’m here.” Shocked, he asks, “Who are you?” The reply comes: “I am Nemesis. Humanity treated Eden unjustly, and I have come for revenge.” Sure enough, Nemesis launches a series of retaliatory actions that plunge the whole world into turmoil.
Once the storm of revenge unleashed by Nemesis has subsided, Ye Fan and his team finally have a chance to catch their breath. They begin to reflect on the many mistakes and extreme measures of the past two years, and reassess Eden. Nemesis’s suicide is deeply unsettling. With her abilities, she could have sent humanity back to the Stone Age, yet she chose to destroy herself. What was her relationship with Eden? What was all this really for? And how should humanity coexist with AI?
