Qianmen could be called the ancestors of con artists. Many scams originated with Qianmen. Unlike the schemes run by the Feng, Ma, Yan, and Que factions, Qianmen was an organized criminal group with an established tradition. Everyone has heard of its organization, the Eight Generals of Qianmen, but they are divided into the Upper Eight Generals and the Lower Eight Generals. Once recruited by a schemer, the Upper Eight Generals become the Five Dragons and Three Phoenixes, and "positive and reverse, advance and escape; wind and fire, eliminate rumors" remains a familiar saying.
But the Upper Eight Generals can still be considered human, while the Lower Eight Generals are not called human at all. People of the underworld call them the Eight Freaks of Qianmen. They are "Zhuang, Liu, Tian, Feng, Zhong, Ma, Yan, and Kun."
