History of European Civilizations

Europe, an ancient and dynamic continent, has given birth to rich and diverse civilizations and cultures. From the Greek and Roman civilizations in the classical period, to the feudal society in the Middle Ages, to the industrial revolution and cultural renaissance in modern times, the history of European civilizations is a historical picture that spans thousands of years. Ancient Greek civilization is the cradle of Western civilization. Around 3000 BC, the Aegean civilization emerged on Crete and the Greek Peninsula. Subsequently, Greek city-states such as Athens and Sparta became centers of politics, philosophy, art, and science. Greek civilization had a profound impact on the democratic system, philosophical thought, literature and art of later generations. Following the Greek civilization, the rise of the Roman Empire brought legal, political, and architectural innovations to Europe. Roman law became the cornerstone of the modern legal system, and Roman roads and buildings still influence European urban planning to this day. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe entered the Middle Ages. This period was characterized by the feudal system, where the relationship between lords and serfs formed the basis of society. The Middle Ages was also a period of great religious influence, with the Catholic Church becoming an important force in politics, culture, and education. From the 14th to the 17th century, the Renaissance movement occurred in Europe. Artists and thinkers during this period rediscovered the value of classical culture and promoted great progress in art and science. At the same time, this was also the Age of Discovery. European explorers opened up new routes, discovered new continents, and promoted global trade and cultural exchanges. The Enlightenment in the 18th century further promoted the development of scientific, philosophical and political thought.
