The first section is a collection of articles from the magazine Zongheng, published since 1983, reorganized into a series of short pieces. Together, they showcase compelling stories that reflect the development of Chinese culture and its transmission from one generation to the next. Beneath the Screen mainly features the true stories behind a series of classic films made after the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
This book helped me understand a lot of the stories behind movies. Changying is really the cradle of new Chinese movies! I especially like the patriotic staff mentioned in the book such as Zhang Xinshi, Wang Qimin, and Liu Xueyao. They stopped the Japanese army's conspiracy to destroy evidence and left us with a lot of precious information. As the book says: "The Japanese army once attempted to destroy the entire factory by burning a large amount of film and causing a fire." Their courage and wisdom are admirable!
