Neither Doubt nor Distance

On the day I got married, everyone in the capital was stunned.

Who could have imagined that the most beautiful woman in the capital would marry a stablehand?

The young marquis stopped my carriage in the street, lifted the curtain, and sneered, “Is marrying me as a concubine beneath you?”

I sneered back. “Better a beggar's wife than a chancellor's concubine.”

He repeatedly said, “Fine,” and declared that he would wait for me to regret it and come crawling back, wagging my tail and begging for his mercy.

But he waited and waited. In the end, my husband rose to the highest ranks, and the young marquis regretted everything.
