The Dutch Republic: Rise, Rise and Fall: 1477–1806

This book is a 300-year history of the Dutch Republic from a new perspective. It is the first comprehensive analysis of the entire process of the Dutch Republic from its inception to its decline. The book is divided into four parts, describing the development process of the Netherlands in each era. From 1477 to 1588, the Republic struggled to get rid of the control of Burgundy, and in the process of awakening its own national consciousness and national consciousness, it ignited a frenzy of religious reforms and great uprisings. From 1588 to 1647, the Republic in the early golden age continued to seek ways to resist Spanish rule, fell into great ideological debates, and developed a policy of religious tolerance in the confrontation of power. From 1647 to 1702, the great development of maritime trade caused the Republic after the Eighty Years' War to fall into struggle under the influence of many ideas. This struggle included not only internal ideological confrontation, but also competition and fighting between the Republic and external Britain and France. From 1702 to 1806, with the devastation of the four Anglo-Dutch wars and the sweep of the Patriot Party movement, even with the death struggle of the New Republic of the Netherlands, the era of decline was bound to come. Finally, under Napoleon's regime, the Republic officially came to an end. The book avoids the previous historical research perspective of the Republic, which was limited to 1649, and traces the time back to before 1572 and extends to the era of the Batavia Republic that replaced the Dutch Republic. At the same time, it expands the region from a single northern region to the southern and German jurisdictions.
