Though the Jiang family was a fallen noble house, Jiang’s father held a middling official post, and they had enough to live comfortably. She thought she would marry her childhood sweetheart and live happily ever after. But then her father was stripped of his title and reduced to a commoner, only to die under mysterious circumstances, with all manner of strange clues surrounding his death. To uncover the truth, Jiang Wangshu asked for help everywhere, only to be turned away. Even her childhood sweetheart betrayed her, kicking her while she was down and becoming engaged to her close friend. After the Jiang family’s downfall, the Fang family schemed behind the scenes, causing her brother to fail the imperial examinations. He never recovered from the blow. Jiang Wangshu knew how important power was. When she learned that the emperor adored beautiful women, she chose to enter the palace as a consort to investigate her father’s death and take revenge on the Fang family. There, she would compete with the noblewomen of the harem for the emperor’s favor and begin her battle for power within the palace.
