In 431 BC, the First Attica Maritime League and the Peloponnesian League, two groups of equal strength, lost mutual trust and became irreconcilable. Athens and Sparta, who were in the leadership positions at the time, gathered their allies and launched a war in order to compete for the internal hegemony of Greece and the higher dominance of the Eastern Mediterranean. This war on land and water lasted until 404 BC. Although there were some short-term military truces in the middle, because it involved so many countries, it was later called the "Ancient World War" by academic circles.
This book is based on an outstanding early historical work by the Athenian historian Thucydides. It records the Peloponnesian War, which spanned nearly 2,500 years, and allows us to witness the unimaginable Greek military catastrophe.
