I'm a Superstar Influencer, Live-Streaming as a Village Chief

Canaan, Village X. Secretary: “Have you ever been a village chief?” Lin Hao: “No.” Secretary: “Come here, I’ll explain. When a village chief takes office, he has to come up with pretexts to cozy up to capitalists and get them to pay taxes and make donations. Only after they pay can he get the people above to allocate funds. Once the money comes in, the capitalists get all their money back, while the funds from above are split thirty-seventy.” Lin Hao: “Why do I only get seventy percent?” Secretary: “That seventy percent belongs to them. You’re lucky to get thirty percent, and even then you have to watch their mood.” Lin Hao: “Whose mood?” Secretary: “The capitalists’.” Lin Hao: “I came all the way back to my hometown to be village chief, just so I’d have to watch the capitalists’ moods?” Secretary: “That’s right!” Lin Hao: “I went to all that trouble and spent money to become village chief, and I still have to cozy up to the capitalists?” Secretary: “That’s right!” Lin Hao: “And come up with pretexts?” Secretary: “That’s right!” Lin Hao: “And still have to watch those damn capitalists’ moods?” Secretary: “That’s right!” Lin Hao: “So I’m basically begging for food on my knees?” Secretary: “Put it that way, and buying an official post to become village chief really is begging on your knees. And plenty of people want to kneel for it but don’t even have the connections!” Lin Hao: “There’s something I don’t get. I’m already village chief, so how come I’m not even as good off as an internet celebrity?” Secretary: “In the eyes of the people, you’re the village chief. In the eyes of the capitalists, you’re just a beggar on your knees. Making money is business. Nothing shameful about that.” Lin Hao: “It is shameful. Damn shameful!”
