The pastries were tiny. Xun Jin finished one in a single bite, then picked up another and offered it to Wei Zhi. “Have one to tide you over!”
Wei Zhi froze for a moment. Instead of taking it with his hand, he leaned down and bit the pastry directly. Xun Jin felt a warm, moist softness brush between her thumb and forefinger.
A jolt ran through her body. At last, Xun Jin understood what it felt like to be electrocuted.
This man was far too good at this. Was he some kind of seasoned flirt?
Xun Jin looked up at him. He had already straightened and was chewing the pastry in a refined manner.
Sensing her gaze, Wei Zhi turned to look at her. His thin lips rubbed together, their color gradually deepening to a vivid red.
Silently reciting, “Form is emptiness,” Xun Jin hurriedly looked away and composed herself.
Neither of them spoke. They stood side by side beneath the veranda, gazing at the flowers and plants in the courtyard, as if time itself had stopped.
Two figures some distance away had been watching them in silence for a long while.
A woman's voice broke the stillness. “Miss, let's go!”
There was no reply. All that followed was the sharp crack of a branch snapping.
