Opening a Pet Shop: Is Level Eight in Animal Talk Really That Impressive?

A slow-burn, everyday urban pet story with plenty of imagination.

The male lead is married and has a child. His marriage is happy, with no melodramatic drama!

When Shu Chang opened a pet shop on the variety show China’s Best Entrepreneur, the production crew stocked it with animals more commonly found at a market.

Fortunately, the System stepped in just in time.

A local dog? That’s a purebred Chinese national dog. You’ve probably memorized Su Shi’s line, “With a yellow hound on my left and a grey falcon on my right,” back in school. It was already recorded in the Qin Dynasty.

A stray cat? That’s a Li Nu, a famous breed of cat that has been around for a thousand years, since the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, buying a Li Nu was practically like getting married, and if a rich or powerful family lost one, they would search the whole city for it.

A flower-patterned snake? That’s a King Rat Snake. It has a “king” character on its head, hence the name King Snake. It can eat pit vipers and cobras, making it a true king among snakes. Best of all, it’s nonvenomous, so you can pet it without worry.

A Silkie chicken? That’s a White Phoenix, once given the name Wushan Chicken by Emperor Qianlong. Its feathers are silky, it has a gentle temperament, and its white exterior and black interior perfectly embody the yin-yang principle of Chinese philosophy. It’s practically the ideal pet to give an elder!

But Shu Chang’s livestreams were getting stranger and stranger. You run a pet shop, yet you helped the police catch a murderer?

Fine, we’ll chalk that up to a coincidence.

But it’s a bit much for a pet shop owner to cook better than a five-star chef.

What? You’ve had training? All right, then how do you explain knowing martial arts, playing musical instruments, and giving incredibly good massages?

Gradually, everyone realized that apart from selling pets, there seemed to be nothing Shu Chang couldn’t do.
