Chen Tuan (871-989) was a famous Taoist scholar and health expert. His thoughts on cultivation had an impact on the development of Taoist inner alchemy, and his thoughts on Yi Xue had an impact on Shao Yong, Zhou Dunyi, Zhu Xi and others of the Confucian school. This book focuses on Chen Tuan and combines research on his teachers, friends and later scholars to reveal why Chen Tuan, as a hermit, had a huge impact on Taoism at that time and in later generations. From the perspective of the relationship between religion and society, this book shows how, under the religious and cultural background of the early Northern Song Dynasty, Chen Tuan, who stayed in the Huashan monastic circle, had political interactions with the royal family and cultural interactions with the scholar-bureaucrats, and influenced the politics, Yi studies, Neo-Confucianism and Nei-alchemy at that time.
