The Shaman King is a fantastical tale of shamanic folk customs set in the ancient past of the Changbai Mountains...
Within decades of the Shaman King, who had presided over the Changbai Mountains' Shamanic faith for hundreds of years, inexplicably departing for the immortal realm, three branches of the faith gradually emerged in the western, southern, and northern regions of the mountains.
The shamans of these three sects all began with the hope that, when the Shaman King's life returned, they could present him with a brand-new Shamanic Temple and allow him to once again take charge of the authority of the Changbai Mountains' central shamanic altar. The new authority they prepared for him was a claim to power they had secretly laid in advance for the former Shaman King. It would also give their regional High Priest a greater sense of pride and honor in their era.
At first, the High Priests of the northern, western, and southern sects shared a common goal: to restore the Changbai Mountains' central shamanic altar and reunify the shamanic world under its rule.
Yet day after day and year after year, the Shaman King's life never returned.
Many years later, new High Priests took over in the northern, western, and southern regions. Each quietly vied with the other two, hoping to make their own sect stronger and peacefully transform their region into the place where the spirit of the Shaman King would reside. In doing so, they hoped to become the supreme leader of the Changbai Mountains' shamanic people, holding the rightful claim to authority.
