Synopsis

A young special forces soldier is struck by lightning and transmigrates into the foolish son of a blacksmith in the Great Xia dynasty. On the very day he arrives, his father dies in battle, his mother dies of grief, and the authorities force a marriage on him. Their already impoverished life is made even harder. Luckily, armed with modern knowledge, the protagonist first makes eel traps and promotes fishing. After the authorities embezzle the reward money for a tiger-slaying hero, he begins a covert struggle against corrupt officials. The officials want money, so they try to make him join a bandit suppression campaign, hoping he will die in the fighting. They never expect him to possess incredible abilities and wipe out the bandits’ mountain stronghold. Time and again, the traps they lay are easily foiled by the protagonist. At that time, Great Xia is economically prosperous but repeatedly suffers invasions by foreign enemies. Disdainful of the dynasty’s weakness, the protagonist starts by bringing bandits under his control, then volunteers his militia to help the imperial army defeat rival states. After offending two nomadic nations in the north, he finds them conspiring to join forces and pressure Great Xia into paying ten million taels of silver in reparations. They even insist on having the protagonist serve as envoy, sending him straight into a trap. At the crucial moment, the protagonist reaches the capital a mere five days earlier than anyone expected. He shatters the alliance between the two nations and skillfully drives them to turn against each other. Thanks to his business genius, the protagonist becomes the emperor’s exclusive merchant and is personally appointed Grand Tutor, while also taking charge of educating the emperor’s five sons. He refuses to become an official, using his status as a first-rank Grand Tutor to do business and make money. In secret, he keeps inventing new products, weapons included. There are no foreign peoples within China. The protagonist’s principle is to rely on deterrence, and he explores for oil and builds chemical plants, ushering Great Xia into the industrial age ahead of its time and widening the gap with neighboring countries. His one great ambition, however, is to unite China peacefully. But when it comes to foreign enemies, he shows no mercy.
