"Midnight" uses some major events that occurred between May and July 1930 as the background of the times. It describes the national capitalist Wu Sunfu's efforts to build his own "Two Bridges Kingdom" in order to revitalize the national industry and use the Civil War to make a fortune. However, Zhao Botao, the broker and financial capitalist of US imperialism, obstructed him in every possible way. Finally, under the harsh situation of warlords fighting and rural bankruptcy, Wu Sunfu tried his best to cope with it, stepped up the oppression and exploitation of workers, and engaged in public debt speculation. However, under the strong economic constraints of Zhao Botao, he ultimately failed and completely went bankrupt. "Midnight" is the peak of Mao Dun's creation.

Lu Guo Mao Cao. A classic among classics, it deserves its reputation. I was a little reluctant before watching it, but I couldn't help but admire it after watching it. It was clearly midnight, and in the closed and short time and space, the power of changing the world was suppressed and surging under this darkness. The creation of portraits of people from all walks of life and the purpose of realism are unfortunately difficult to develop in many aspects (the entanglement between modern and pre-modern times is lacking). A must-read masterpiece of modern and contemporary literature.
This book is so well written! It vividly depicts the social picture of that era and gave me a deeper understanding of national capitalists. The character Wu Sunfu impressed me deeply. His phrase "I don't plan to fail, I want schedulers IDGET" shows his determination and ambition. I especially hate the financial capitalist Zhao Botao. He always obstructs Wu Sunfu. He is really a villain! This book has a twists and turns, I recommend you read it.
