Before my grandfather died, he clutched a work journal and kept repeating the same words: "I'm sorry, Captain Chen."
Captain Chen was named Chen Diansheng. In 1970, he led seven men into a massive black hole deep in the Greater Khingan Range. None of them ever came out. My grandfather was the driver, keeping watch at the entrance. On the fourth night, he hauled up a blood-soaked box. Then a strange serpent crawled out of the cave. In its mouth, a woman's face was singing.
Then came the explosion.
