Lanzhou History and Culture: Ethnic Migration

Lanzhou is the political, economic, and cultural center of Gansu Province. Situated where the Qinghai-Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and Loess Plateaus meet, it lies midway between north and south and guards a vital east-west passage. The Yellow River runs through the city, and the landscape rises and falls along its banks. Its long history and splendid culture have shaped Lanzhou’s distinctive heritage, bringing together ethnic, Yellow River, and Silk Road cultures. This cultural fabric has not only formed the sincere and down-to-earth character of Lanzhou’s people, but has also influenced generations of residents in their material and spiritual lives. Lanzhou: History and Culture offers a comprehensive portrait of the city’s history and culture from a variety of perspectives.
