Three Kingdoms: The Land Is Divided in Three begins with Sun Quan and Liu Bei joining forces against Cao Cao at the Battle of Red Cliffs, and ends with Sun Quan's capture of Jingzhou and his unification of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze. This was the period when the Three Kingdoms took shape. After Cao Cao's forces suffered a major defeat at Red Cliffs and retreated north, the Sun-Liu alliance emerged victorious and divided Jingzhou between them, setting the stage for the land's division into three. Over the following decade or more, the various powers competed and fought one another, gradually forming three major blocs led by Cao, Liu, and Sun. The nascent states of Wei, Shu, and Wu began to take shape. Meanwhile, the history of the Three Kingdoms remained unpredictable and fraught with war.
